ABOUT MEXICO CITY- Fast Facts

Country:   Mexico
Country Location: Bordered on the north by the United States of America, on the south and east coast by the Pacific ocean, and on the southeast border by Guatemala, Belize and the Caribbean Sea.
Geography: Located in the Valley of Mexico in the south of the country.
History: Mexico City was originally constructed on an island of Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs in 1325. In the siege of 1521, the city was completely destroyed and was rebuilt to Spanish urban standards. Mexico City has served as a major part of the Spanish colonial empire. The Federal District was formed in 1824, after the city gained its independence.

Did you know? Mexico City has 160 museums, over 100 art galleries, and 30 concert halls. The archeological ruins of Teotihuacan (pyramids), built in the 2nd century B.C., are located just outside the city.

The Mexico City Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International and Kendall College held evening of culinary delights in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Chicago's Sister City relationship with Mexico City. The fundraiser featured renowned executive chefs from Mexico City and Chicago, including Lula Martín del Campo from Roca (Mexico City), Enrique Olvera from Pujol (Mexico City - ranked among the top 50 restaurants in the world), Daniel Ovadia from Paxia (Mexico City), Jair Tellez from MeroToro (Mexico City), Rick Bayless from Frontera Grill and Topolobampo (Chicago), Jimmy Bannos from The Purple Pig and Heaven on Seven (Chicago), Greg Elliott from Lockwood Restaurant (Chicago), Carlos Gaytan from Mexique (Chicago), Laura Piper from Trattoria No. 10 (Chicago), Arun Sampanthavivat from Arun's (Chicago), and Randy Waidner from Gibsons Steakhouse (Chicago). All proceeds supported the educational and cultural activities organized by the Mexico City Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International.
