ABOUT MILAN – Fast Facts

Geography: In the northwest of Italy
History:  Milan can easily trace its history to Roman times, as is evidenced by Roman ruins which are still visible throughout the city! The city became a city-state in the 11th century and entered a period of rapid growth. It came under Spanish rule in 1535 and passed to Austria in 1713. Napoleon made Milan the capital of his Italian Republic in 1802. During World War II the city was heavily bombed, but many artistic and cultural treasures, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, were left intact. The city was quickly rebuilt and grew to its modern prominence.

Did You Know? Via Monte Napoleone, intersected by narrow side streets, is touted as the most elegant street in Milan, and one of the most sophisticated in all of Europe, where one can find the greatest concentration of famous fashion designers outlets, jewelers, furriers and antique dealers.
Flag Description: "Tricolore" - the flag consists of three vertical bands of equal width, displaying the national colors of Italy: green, white and red.

Focus: Arts & Culture
After a successful sold-out performance in June of 2011, on March 20, 2012, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago and the Milan Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International once again presented a public theatrical performance based on I promessi sposi (The Bethrothed), in the Chicago Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater. Performers included Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, Gilda Gelati and Elsa Martignoni. A reception was held afterwards in the G.A.R. Rotunda, where guests were able to mingle with the performers.
