Geography: Located in western central European Russia, Moscow is the country’s largest city.  
History:  Moscow was first mentioned by chroniclers in 1147. From the 15th Century until the beginning of the 18th century, it was the capital of the Russian State. Moscow was also the capital of the former Soviet Union and in 1991 became the capital of the Russian Federation.

Did you know? The more than 150 stations of the Moscow Metro were designed and embellished by prominent Russian architects, artists and sculptors, whose great talent and decorative skills created a peculiar underground network of great artistic value.  
Flag Description: Upon the break up of the Soviet Union, Russia reverted back to a flag first adopted in the 17th century by Peter the Great, who on a trip to Europe decided to adopt a variation on the flag of the Netherlands. Because of the influence of Russia in Europe, these colors have come to be referred to as Pan-Slavic colors.

October 19

The Adler Planetarium and Moscow Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International hosted an afternoon panel discussion with cosmonauts Boris Volynov and Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu. Volynov and Prunariu where they discussed the significance of Gagarin’s world changing flight, and their personal experiences and mission accomplishments as part of the international space program. Participants were also able to view the bronze bust of Yuri Gagarin, a gift to Chicago from its sister city Moscow. The bust will be on display at the Adler alongside Alan B. Shepard’s jet flight suit and helmet, on loan from the personal collection of the Alan B. Shepard Family.

June 13

Moscow Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International hosted the first Russia Day celebration in Chicago at the Chicago Cultural Center. His Excellency Sergey Kislyak, Ambassador of Russia to the United States, was the guest of honor at the event. While in town, the Ambassador met with the Moscow Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International and the Mayor’s Office of International to discuss future collaboration between the City of Chicago and its Sister City Moscow.
